ICELANDIC THEATER RECORD

A significant milestone will be reached Saturday July 27th when the hit play HOW TO BECOME ICELANDIC IN 60 MINUTES will be performed for the 1000th time. The show opened at Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre on May 26th 2012.

More than 130,000 people have seen the show during it’s run, which is performed in English. The show is much more than a stand up routine, it is a hilarious blend of incisive and visual observation of the Icelandic human condition. Audiences laugh, learn and leave the show feeling more Icelandic. How to Become is written and produced by Bjarni Haukur Thorsson (also original star of the show) and directed by Sigurður Sigurjónsson. Six actors have performed the show during the years.

No other Icelandic theatrical production has been performed 1000 times.

„I’m looking forward going on stage on Saturday and performing the show for the thousandth time. It has been an amazing adventure. To be honest I thought the show would not start again after the pandemic. But here we are, doing really well. Around 90% of the audience are foreigners and almost half of that are Americans. Sometimes Icelanders show up and that’s always a lot of fun” say’s Bjarni Haukur.

A Swedish version of the show, HOW TO BECOME SWEDISH IN 60 MINUTES opened in Stockholm in 2016. A Norwegian version, HOW TO BECOME NORWEGIAN IN 60 MINTUES opens in Oslo next year.
